Knitting is one of the most relaxing and calming activities you can engage in. It reduces stress and is good for anxiety. Knitting helps stimulate the brain, sharpen focus, and improve your memory. Knitting in a social setting will reduced loneliness and isolation. Crochet builds your self-esteem by being productive.

Start with a handmade “Magic Circle”

The use of a “Magic Circle” is more know in the crochet community, but it works well for center started knitting.

Create a hook with a starting yarn thread, easy to close and creates and esthetically pleasing starting point for the magic circle.

What You Need:

Appropriately sized:
-crochet needle
-knitting needles for socks
-interchangeable or fixed circular knitting needles

For center started models it is more comfortable to start with knitting needles for socks. After the number of the hooks reach the required numbers it is easier to work with circular knitting needles.

1 Hooks pickup

Create a simple or double hook.

With a crochet needle pickup the hooks in the desired quantity by knotting the thread on the hook lines. In a similar fashion to the crocheted hooks but not chaining, pick up side by side on the crochet needle.

2 Move the hooks to knitting needles for socks

In our example we start with 9 hooks, the 9 hooks are equally distributed on three needles, 3 hooks/needle.

3 Closing the starting hook

Carefully pool the starting thread, to close the hook tightly.

4 Knit based on description

With a free needle start knitting based on the description.

5 Find your circle needles

As soon as the number of loops reach the required quantity it is more comfortable to switch to the circle knitting needle.

With a bit of perseverance, you can turn this into a sopping bag or anything else you can imagine.

Basic knitting is pretty easy to learn. As you saw in this tutorial, there are basically just a few handmade stitches which can be combined and adjusted to create an almost endless number of effects.
